Latest Earnings Reports Leave Many Scratching Their Heads

When Microsoft Corp. reported its quarterly sales and profits Thursday, the major media agreed the numbers were not good.

"Microsoft Revenue Up, Misses Estimate," said a headline in The Washington Post. "Microsoft Corp. said yesterday that it was bringing in more money -- only not as much as investors had expected."

The Wall Street Journal noted that earnings rose 12 percent "but continuing weakness in the personal-computer and corporate-software markets, combined with lethargic overseas sales of its Xbox game system, pinched sales growth and caused the company to lower revenue and profit expectations for the current quarter and next fiscal year."
