I think the biggest problem for Itanium isn't just the unproven hardware, it's that unproven software will have to be debugged on the unproven hardware. Hammer can be established as robust and reliable with the existing software base and preserve the decades of internally code built up by companies to give them a competitive advantage, then be extended to new 64-bit software at whatever pace companies wish to move.
