Your comments made it sound like the oil literally goes into a pool and the American firms have no idea from whom they are getting their oil.

Oil is a commodity. As such, you are buying it without regard for where it comes from. You may, in fact, have no control over where it comes from. You are buying a contract that entitles you to take delivery. You are not buying the right to decide where it comes from.
