Datang Would Compete for 3G

CHINA, Apr 22, 2002 (AsiaPort via COMTEX) -- Datang Telecom which was one the three owners of 3G standard in the world would march into 3G field. Facing the competition from LAS-CDMA (Large Area Synchronized - Code Division Multiple Access), a patented 4th generation wireless technology, Datang Telecom would perfect its technology, and press ahead of its 3G plan.
In January, Datang Telecom Technology Co. Ltd signed an agreement with Siemens AG of Germany on TD-SCDMA technology.
According to the agreement, which covers three years, both firms will cooperate to promote TD-SCDMA-based third-generation mobile systems in mainland China and overseas.
The TD-SCDMA standard, submitted by Datang to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on behalf of the mainland, was adopted by the ITU and the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). It has since been one of the three dominant 3G standards, along with W-CDMA of Europe and cdma2000 of the United States.
Datang and Siemens signed an initial agreement in August 1999 on the development of TD-SCDMA. Datang has invested about $48.4 million so far.
Experts said that if TD-SCDMA is put into use by the end of 2003, market share in mainland China alone will be about $120.9 billion by 2010.
