Michael - as you say, depending on where you start the blow by blow commentary, you can change who "started" it and with it the impllication as to who is "at fault". (My favorite here is to lay it all at the feet of the British who managed to muck up that entire area of the world).

But that is what I mean about being trapped in the "box"- that the best response to an "attack" is a stronger counter attack which demands a stronger counter-counter attack....
...In control theory this is known as a positive feedback loop and results in a runaway process that ends up at an extreme. In this case it is headed towards an all out regional conflict with possible global ramifications. (Thank you Collin Powell for disrupting this cycle - at least temporarily).
...And in that context my out of box approach was to start using negative feedback - answer an attack with a courtesy. Damn hard to do for either side which is why the US is so critical as an intermediary. And if you go back to my earlier post about the next steps for Powell you will see that I am actually trying to get a positive feedback loop of niceties (vs the recent cycle of nasties).

As for the "Euro" box - Why do I get the feeling that you are using Euro as a four letter word? ;-).
...But seriously folks - I said it before and I'll say it again - the European criticism has value. Granted that much of it is thinly disguised pen-s envy. But still I'd rather have the criticism rather than empty flattery.
...Case in point - it was the European criticism that help prod Bush into a more active role in the conflict which has brought on a least a temporary lull in the insanity.
