I did not know about Italy and the Netherlands and had completely forgotten about Haider.

In this context, it certainly appears that Le Pen's win over Jospin is a part of a larger trend, not a bizarre anomaly. The inclusion of the Dutch in the group of European countries with far right wins is telling--I can't imagine a less receptive spot for the far right.

Though Chirac will trounce Le Pen, it will be interesting to see how he fares.
