Your friend is correct that Microsoft created an incredibly intrusive WindowsXP registration process, which evidently creates difficulty upgrading system hardware. But, if you feel that you MUST run Microsoft Word, then you must run MS Windows(or Apple.) If you want more stability but cannot abide the intrusive Microsoft WinXP registration process, consider installing Linux with a MS Word compatible application suite like Staroffice. IMO, switching from Win9X to Win2000 is not a good option since both have been replaced by a newer Windows version, and both will receive a low level of MSFT support. Doing this would just postpone the decision of registering with the MSFT system or switching to Linux. Good luck with it.
