M, Frankly, as I look at the Big Boyz, the treatment of stock options is just a diversion.

While folks like to focus on the techs and their options, the real damage to shareholders' equity in the Big Boyz is in the category of "currency losses." The multinationals sell their stuff overseas at X, and when they only realize Y, they write it off directly against stockholders' equity. The stock options issue is the sacrificial lamb.
