that's enough to destroy the administrative capacity of the PA (although why one would want to do that is really a mystery), but not enough to destroy either Palestinian nationalism or the possibility of future terrorism. To do that the Israelis would have to play by Hama rules, which they are not going to do (and should not do, IMO).

I don't think the Israelis harbor any illusions on that score. They are just not prepared to hand the territory over to Hamas (from which the PLO has become ideologically indistinguishable lately) as a base to launch terror operations. Message: we are prepared to make your pain greater than our pain. It makes some sense to destroy the PA as an object lesson to whoever runs the territory next.

What the Israelis are really hoping for is a Jordanian-run mandatory government for the West Bank. But I doubt that there is enough money on the planet to make King Abdullah volunteer for such a role. Survival always comes first.
