Mr Bunche sounds like an interesting individual, but have serious doubts about this proposition:

It seems to me that the view from the State Dept. - certainly the view that was translated into policy - was that the necessity of maintaining good relations with the colonial powers, mainly Britain and France, for the sake of the European alliance took precedence over the desires of the colonized peoples. I am having a hard time thinking of any case in which US pressure forced a colonial power to surrender a colony, except when control of the colony was already slipping away.
