Samsung SDI 1st-Qtr Profit Rises 25% on Sales Rebound (Update4)
By Young-Jo Bae

Seoul, April 23 (Bloomberg) -- Samsung SDI Co., the world's second-largest maker of cathode-ray tubes for computer monitors and televisions, said first-quarter profit rose 25 percent after demand rebounded and competition eased as rivals switched to making flat screens.

Net income rose to 155 billion won ($118 million) from 125 billion won in the year-earlier period on a consolidated basis, the company said. Sales rose 14 percent to 1.6 trillion won, while operating profit increased 32 percent to 241 billion won.

Samsung SDI increased its dominance of the cathode ray tube market, lifting its share to 27 percent from 25 percent, as Hitachi Ltd. and other rivals dropped out. The company also saw rapid sales growth for new products such as flat screens for handsets and rechargeable batteries.

``This is the return for surviving fierce competition,'' said Kenneth Kim, an analyst at Meritz Securities Co. ``The outlook for bulkier cathode-ray tubes still looks good'' although computer makers are shifting to flat screens.
