He's hardly be the first smart guy to get it wrong. Feynman and Weaver worked for years on a theory that all matter was made of electrons. Feynman gave it up after a few years; Weaver kept on it till he died. Both were brilliant physicists.

Appeal to authority is not an argument in science. Data. Get the data.
