Right, phobia means aversion or strong dislike, but what does homo mean?

One definition is a member of the genus Homo, a human being. In this sense a homophobe would be a hater of human beings. This doesn't seem to fit.

Another definition is same. In this sense a homophobe would have a fear of sameness. That seems rather nonsensical.

Another definition is a disparaging term used to describe gays and lesbians. I guess this is the definition we are using here. Why do people who use the word 'homophobe' wish to disparage gays and lesbians?
