Jane, only good thing about Emeryville is that is close to the Bay Bridge which goes to San Francisco. Emeryville is almost a "non entity". Closest good beach is Santa Cruz about 70-90 minutes from Emeryville. There may be some closer decent beaches a little south of San Francisco. Lots of other stuff to do as I'm sure you are aware.
