You might be interested in the extent of "homophobia" in the U.S.

A quick Google search yields these soundbites:

In a 1997 Gallup poll 52% of Americans say that homosexuality should not be considered an "acceptable alternative life-style". This finding is not substantially different from the results of a Gallup poll 15 years ago."

[In the same poll] 59% of Americans say that homosexuality is morally wrong.

In the May 2001 Gallup poll 42% of Americans felt that homosexuality should be illegal.

By the definition you choose you use, it seems fair to say that about half the U.S. population is homophobic.

Statistically speaking, it would seem reasonable to say that there are a lot of homophobics on this thread, on SI, and that you, Rambi, meet and interact with them every day. And it is certainly your privilege to publicly brand all of them with the homophobic label.

Regardless of dictionary definitions, the term "homophobic" has commonly taken on a connotation of hatred toward gays, frequently associated with the overt acts of both discrimination and crimes against them . While you may choose to use the much broader definition in your labelling, it is my belief (belief, mind you, from what I have read) that thoughtful gays would prefer that you didn't ... the reason being that when you apply the term to hundreds of millions at a time, you rob of it of its power to delineate those persons who truly present a threat to the gay community.
