Before dictionary.com came along I used the AHD. Still do, on occasion. When my sister-in-law saw it on my desk she made that comment. Language is her forté so what she said stuck with me. I've read a couple of Bill Bryson's travel books, I like him. I'll check out Mother Tongue.... Never mind about proactive, just ventilating a pet peeve....
