One thing not to lose sight of is that, at least in France, much of the Le Pen vote has come from former Parti Communist voters. The PC in this election has had their lowest score, under 4 %, just about ever since their formation. In Mitterand's years, they would get 20 % or more, and it's certain that these voters are not now voting for mainstream candidates.

This kind of useless protest voting, coupled with record levels of abstentionism and the dilution of a record number of first round candidates is what has brought Le Pen into the second round, more than a real movement to the extreme right. Just as we should do something about the reliability of our voting systems after what happened in Florida, France should tighten requirements for candidates in the first round to rid themselves of some of the clowns. Just a few short weeks ago, Le Pen was apparently having trouble rounding up the 500 mayoral signatures needed to even participate !

France is really run by the labor unions anyhow. I watched them shut the country down in 1995 when Chirac and Juppé were at the helm, and I can't imagine what they'd do if Le Pen by some miracle ever won the elections in May.
