"It is common, afterall, in the clinical literature to find descriptions of men who feel some latent attraction to other men but who are repressing it because homosexuality is so "horrible", and these men tend to be the most physically aggressive toward gays.

True. The defense against extreme internal anxiety often involves projecting that anxiety onto people outside oneself with aggressiveness and anger.

Culture aside, homosexuality has always been a normal biological variant in cultures across history. Many cultures had the habit of exalting such people into special social roles in the community. Thus, they were made to fit into the self esteem of the tribe. I recall there were Native cultures in North America which embraced the homosexual variance as a positive and valuable addition to the infinite uniqueness of the human family. There were undoubtedly cultures as well( such as our own) which set them apart to be ridiculed and sneered at.

"I think I will save my disgust and revulsion for people who kill other people, or maim or torture, or abuse children, not for people who love other adults in a different way."

It would seem there are indeed things which are deserving of disgust.

The world is fortunate that homophobia did not break the spirits of all these people; though, I suppose that the best of all are probably missing...
