Hi Ken,

I stare at monitors all day (and all evening usually) too, and I like having desktop toys as much as anyone else. Tamagotchis don't shut down when you want to go home, though. I have to pay attention to mine from the time I wake up to the time I go to bed. Also, it runs for 24 hours a day for a week or so. I don't know how that behavior can translate to an environment where you don't have the machine with you all day. Maybe Bandai will come up with a pet that goes into suspended animation when you need to shut down the system or leave it for a while. I sam an article in the Playmates thread, techstocks.com, about a company called P.F.Magic which makest pet cats and dogs for PCs. These pets run whenver the PC runs and seem more appropriate for a PC environment. I'll hold off on my opinions of a PC or Nintendo Tamagotchi until I actually see one.

I hope I don't sound argumentative. I am just writing out my thoughts for discussion. The portable version of virtual pets has caught on very well in the States and elsewhere and is still very much ablaze. One of my coworkers, a woman in her mid-40's, asks me every day or so how my Tamagotchi is doing and complains that every store she checks is out of all of virtual pets of all kinds. I know there are still many many people who haven't heard of virtual pets at all, and who will be interested when they finally do hear about them. I think the big wave will happen when school starts this fall and every kid who doesn't have a Tamagotchi will have to have one to keep up with his/her friends. It will also be interesting to see if/how virtual pets evolve and become more sophisticated and extend the trend.

As far as desktop pets go, I would like to see pets that can wander around a company network, visitng different PCs and run around in virtual dogpacks or something.

Take care,

Kirk
