Digital video discs to roll out big this fall

The new digital video disc format gets a boost as co-creator Warner Home Video announces plans to begin distributing DVD movies nationwide this fall.

A top DVD proponent, Warner has sold movies on the new CD-size optical discs since March in seven cities, under the Warner, MGM and New Line labels.

But the word in Las Vegas, where the Video Software Dealers Association meets through Sunday, is that another studio (probably Disney, Fox or Paramount) may soon get into the act. "I would not
be surprised," says the group's Jeff Eves.

About 105,000 DVD players have been shipped - the best barometer available from the Consumer Electronics Manufacturers Association. Warner has sold 1 million movies in the USA, says Warner's Warren Lieberfarb. More than 20,000 DVDs were sold the week ending June 29, the highest so far, says VideoScan, which tracks some retail sales.

By year's end, expect up to 250 DVD movies, a mix of recent releases and classics. Among those touted at the show (all about $25): Jerry Maguire (just out), Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Rob Roy and Lawnmower Man (August), Amadeus and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (by Christmas).
