I know what you mean. We had selfishly hoped CW would be here, too, as this next year will be his senior one. Of course, my mother kept thinking we were gone, and then we would straggle back after life's disasters to be fed and coddled and put back together for a few weeks or months.

After my mother died and the house sold, I felt so bereft, even though I was in my 40s and had husband and children and a home of my own. I mourned not just the loss of my mother, but that security of "home" that had always and unfailingly been there. It's one reason that we don't want to sell this house, even though it is far too big now. It is "home". Once you move after the kids are gone, they never will see another house with the same attachment as the one they grew up in.
