AD, sure, there are other technologies out there, but the problem is the pressure in deployment. Machines need to be certified. there are cheapies "sniffers" for explosive, but before you know it, terrorists will seal their explosive, buy sniffers to make sure there are no leaks and thus obviate that counter terrorism tool. The imaging systems tend to get around this (far from perfectly mind you), but more importantly, they are already there, and servicing requirements often dictates that the existing technology at the time of deployment (particularly such a massive and rapid deployment) wins.
