What do people think of the 20-25% Hammer improvement over Athlon? Seems a bit underwhelming...

Perhaps you are confusing performance with IPC? Remember Hammer has a longer pipe, tuned for higher clock frequencies, hopefully substantially higher.

If you look at it in the context of the P4 managing a -30% improvement over P3, but compensating with higher clock, then perhaps you can see that it is perfectly possible for Opteron to kick Xeon's ass with "only" a 25% IPC improvement over Athlon, (or about 75% over P4 Xeon at the same clock speed).
