My reasoning relied quite simply on the AHD dictionary, a highly regarded and accepted source. For whatever reason, you won't accept this (and the other dictionary sources presented later), but are insisting on defining the word the way you believe it should be defined. I understand your point, but since I am not inclined (or presumptuous enough) to rewrite the AHD, I think we have reached Dead Horse Level on this subject. This seems to be a case of PC, where using a word that has unpleasant connotations is not nice. PC or not PC? They say that is the question. Hey, orthophiles and orthophobes, may I make a suggestion?
