I tell my kids not to judge people who are nice people but just happen to be different. If Heather has two mommies, or Jacob is raised by his grandparents, or Noah wears his hair in a bun because of his religion, I say to my children, give them a chance. If they are kind then be their friend.

Agree whole-heartedly!

I don't tell my kids to wait and think before they speak- sometimes if we think too hard we'll find a reason not to be friends with someone.

Sorry, but I do. Many cultures, such as Asian cultures, teach their children to wait and think before they respond. I always use the 'wait, think', response.

The people I tell my kids to be wary of, are people who want to foment antagonism toward other kids. The people who go out of there way to exclude people.

Agree again. But this is true for those children who need to be wary of adults that exclude the opinions of any adults as long as those opinions are not detrimental to their safety.

Those are the people religions really ought to exclude, but unfortunately those are the people religions often reward.

Sorry, but this one doesn't make sense. If we're talking to kids, they should know that they shouldn't be excluded because they are religious or atheists.

As the song from the South Pacific states...'they have to be taught to hate..' and that goes for the right and the left.
