That's why I think it was classic homophobia. They would not have said it was "a moral failing." They specifically didn't say that. But something in them made them do terrible, cruel things to Jean, to try to keep her from having any sex, which meant any love, as they knew.

Yes, Jean seemed glad that her nieces grew up able to use the word "lesbian" without cringing.

Back far enough, there was surely religious influence. Everybody's a member of the culture.
