My personal experience was with people who believed that all plants and animals were gifts who should be honored and thanked for giving their lives for food, etc.

Their view of homosexuality was an older view kept alive by the elders, mostly through oral tradition. The takeover of the Indian tribes by the army and the priests had substituted a Judeo-Christian ethic as regards homosexuals. They were either very bad or very sick.

It is my understanding that the prior culture considered the homosexuals in the natural way that rarity is valued. They were different and mysterious, and thus represented a message from the creator...a teaching. In practical sense, they normally stayed in camp with the women which added to the tribal defense. As well, it was considered that their "orientation" was symbolic of being privy to other mysteries and to the spiritual world. Thus, they acted as advisors and as "contrary" thinkers to bring insight and perspective which was unavailable to either Men or Women. They added their own unique perspective, humour, and wisdom--as one would expect.

In many tribes, the discovery of homosexual proclivities was a cause for celebration. They had no "doctrine" from ancient books to tell them what to hate or what to like. They simply had strange and mysterious facts to deal with. They treated this as just another gift and mystery from the Creator. By expecting to learn from these "gifts", they undoubtedly were not disappointed...
