Actually no one knows if there is much oil in ANWAR.
Only one test well has been drilled and the results are top secret. Only the oil company that paid for it knows. And "recoverable oil" is even more of a mystery. You know how it is in the wildcatting business. You have to keep poking deep holes until you find it. And sometimes you keep poking and poking and poking and never find anything. Or sometimes you get a surprise gusher.

Bush would have a little more credibioity on this issue if he hadn't just defeated the fuel efficiency bill which would save far more than ANWAR right now, and not ten years from now. Estimates are ANWAR oil would not be deliverable for ten years. By then using the same money and resources we could build a hydrogen fuel infrastructure for a whole new breed of clean cars. And hydrogen is a more powerful fuel that gasoline. We use it to launch the Space Shuttle.
it comes from water so it's infinitely renewable. Unless of course blogal warming ever gets so bad there's no water left. But by then we'd all be dead anyway so who cares if the car gets filled. ggg
