especially in relation to the rest of the world.
The comparison to the rest of the world does nothing to show that the US way of life is excessive. Most of the world would live more like us if they had the money.

When you use the word excessive what exactly do you mean by it in this context?

Tim, we are roughly 3% of the world's population; yet we consume 25% of the oil. By my standards, that's excessive.
