LG Telecom 1Q Profit Rises 19% on More Customers (Update2)
By Young-Jo Bae

Seoul, April 25 (Bloomberg) -- LG Telecom Ltd., South Korea's third-largest mobile-phone company, said first-quarter profit rose 19 percent after the company signed up more customers.

Profit rose to 43 billion won ($32 million) from 36 billion won in the year-earlier period after the number of subscribers increased 14 percent to 4.4 million, the company said. Sales rose 13 percent to 516 billion won, while operating profit fell 17.5 percent to 80 billion won on spending on marketing and networks.

While LG Telecom is expanding its customer list, rivals are increasing their lists at a faster rate and analysts speculate the company lacks the resources to beat competitors in marketing. In March, SK Telecom Co. signed up two thirds of the 638,000 new mobile subscribers registered in Korea.

``LG Telecom needs to increase its subscribers substantially to boost its shares,'' said Suh Yong Won, an analyst at Hyundai Securities Co.
