As I put it, the key difference between the US and Europe is not the immigration thing... Both worlds are faced with an ever growing influx of immigrants from developing countries. What actually differentiates them is Co-optation vs Home Colonialism.
Indeed, the US is essentially a co-optative fabric willing to mix its diverse minorities with its maintsream constituency at every level of society. Whereas Europe still clings to colonialism as the only rationale to hold a racially and culturally diverse society together, hence my coinage: Home Colonialism, that is, Europe's colonialism of yore (in Africa, Asia, the Mideast,...) re-engineered for the European heartland....
Indeed, as more and more (mainly [North-]African) immigrants pour into Europe, the old colonial frameworks are gradually brought back to life. Ethnic minorities are not handled the US way --which is despised by France as crass communitarianism-- but, rather, are compelled to fit into a segregationist mold.... |
