McMillan's point is an excellent one. Have you considered that the behavior of the non-stocks (such as bond CEFs, REITs) in the NYSE was simply correlated with ST interest rates? Note that the A-D line didn't move up convincingly until the Fed began aggressively cutting rates in late 2000.

I am long some stocks in the food processing and defense industries - short a few financial institutions. I am agnostic about the direction of the market, but it certainly doesn't look bullish.
