Tim, we are roughly 3% of the world's population; yet we consume 25% of the oil. By my standards, that's excessive.
We are three percent of the world's population but we produce about 20% of the world's gross production. 25% of the oil use is not that excessive. We also produce a lot more then 3% of the oil.

What is the point of arguing when someone can say that consuming 25% of the world's oil production is not excessive even though you hold only 3% of the world's population.

Its like saying a 300 lb guy is entitled to eat three times the calories that I do because he makes twice as much money per year as I do. I guess he can.........but it's still gluttony.

Would you expect us to give our oil production away to other countries to try and be "fair" or to avoid being excessive?

Please..........you patronize me.

Would you expect undeveloped countries to use as much oil as us, or is it that we should only use as much as they do? Neither makes idea makes sense. We have a developed industrial base, they don't.

And we also average nearly three cars per family, a couple of recreational vehicles...boat, snowmobile etc; at least one SUV plus maybe a dirt bike.........I mean we have more toys that consume more oil than is necessary period.

My point isn't as much that our oil use isn't excessive (although I believe it is not) but rather that your argument is weak.

Its not weak if you give a sh*t. However, thinking the world owes you a living makes the argument even weaker. Being severely narcissistic makes the argument still weaker. Throw in a little immaturity and I could see how someone might find it irrelevant.

We use a larger percentage of oil then our percentage of the population for very simple and rational reasons. There is nothing in your argument that shows that our oil use is excessive.

Yeah, you're right.

Also I asked what you meant by excessive in this context. You never answered unless your answer is the implied on that excessive oil consumption is when a country uses a larger percentage of the world's oil production then its percentage of the world's population. That is not the definition most people would use for excessive.

Really? What would you use? The number of guns vs the level of oil consumption?

Also according to the census bureau's estimates the US population is 286,905,844 and the world's population is 6,220,307,972. That makes the world's population 21.68 times as much as the US's. If we had 3% of the world's population the world's population would be 33 1/3 times greater. We actually have close to 5% of the world's population.

Thanks for the update. That 2% difference really changes the argument for me.
