IMO, there are several basic reasons that should propel AMAT.

1) Digital photography is here to stay. Cameras are getting much cheaper and easier to use. Sales are up significantly.

2) HDTV, and thin TV screens are beginning to accelerate. I don't know how chip-intensive they are, but sales are accelerating.

3) Car computer maps are also beginning to catch on. Still small, but we'll see sales in the millions soon.

4) Probably most important, and related to digital photography, demand for computers with Windows XP will turn around.

5) The CEO of Intel was on TV this morning, and he claimed that the bigger wafer increases yields and thus productivity. Those manufacturers who haven't upgraded because they wanted to limit capex, cannot afford to stay in the race without upgrading.

6) The background is an improving economy and low interest rates.

Lord knows, I've been wrong before!
