QS - great answer. The biggest barrier to a shift to 64 bit has always been app compatibility. That's why Alpha NT failed, and you are correct that it has been an unexploited strength of Sun.

But it is not the bulk of applications which need that compatibility, but only a few key ones. A server user can, for example, simply upgrade his current server, and add only the 64 bit database product, and see transaction performance improve by a factor of 20 with no change to any 32 bit client app settings. Is there value in that? You bet there is.

The idea that you need all 64 bit apps to take advantage of a 64 bit server misses the point. There are only a few applications which really need 64 bits, but they are apps which have a big economic impact.
