Petz, Re: ""will ship next year" - Yea, like WHEN?"

Given that they already have first silicon out, product launch would usually be about 9-12 months away (especially since this design is more like a shrink + cache, which tend to reach the market more quickly, as compared to a major redesign like McKinley). You might have a point about the non-working silicon, in which case, there may need to be another stepping. This would certainly put product launch on the far end of the scale, or perhaps push it out by a month (depending on how severe the problem is). I would expect the launch to come in the first half of 2003, even if you are correct about the silicon being "non-working". It likely won't be trailing Opteron (another "first half" launch) by more than a quarter, and it could be quite competitive in terms of performance.

If Madison has 64-bit performance that meets or exceeds Opteron, then it might come down to a race for who can get major software support first. In that case, my money would be on Intel, given the fact that they've had a year or more of a "head start".
