I think that Ashcroft was acting out of conviction, whether or not you approve. It fits his profile. It is silly to try to further impugn his motives by suggesting it is all "politics", when he is, after all, one of those whom he is supposedly "playing to".

I have no doubt that Ashcroft was acting out of conviction, just not conviction that some important legislation was not being administered properly. His conviction is a conviction that suicide is a sin and that he has the right to take advantage of his position to impose it on all of us. That's what I meant by a political rather than legal decision. I never suggested that he was just playing to anyone.
