France Telecom Upgrades Network Link With Corvis WDM Equipment
Corvis XF Repeaterless Festoon Product Connects Mainland With The Island of Corsica
COLUMBIA, Md., April 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Corvis Corporation (Nasdaq: CORV - news) a leading provider of intelligent optical networking solutions, today announced that France Telecom has upgraded one of its network links using Corvis' next-generation repeaterless festoon product. This 4 x 2.5 Gbps link, which now connects the French mainland to the island of Corsica, will provide France Telecom with 4 times more capacity, resulting in a lower cost per bit of information. The deployment of this link is part of a multi-year agreement signed in June 2001 with France Telecom, previously announced as ``Corvis' unnamed global carrier.''
``We are extremely proud to have France Telecom, a technological leader recognized worldwide, as a customer,'' said Dr. David Huber, president and chief executive officer of Corvis. ``By using our next-generation technology in this link, France Telecom will be able to reduce its capital and operational expenditures.''
The Corvis XF festoon product offers repeaterless links for mainland-to-island and island-to-island spans as well as multiple links along coastlines. Corvis' proven Raman amplification and soliton transmission technologies allow carriers to transmit up to 800 gigabits per fiber over distances as long as 350 km without the use of in-line amplifiers. The elimination of in-line amplifiers in festoon, regional point-to-point and spur network applications cuts capital expenditures and operational costs dramatically, and speeds network deployment. This allows carriers to produce revenue more rapidly.
With Corvis technology, France Telecom will gain when fully upgraded a 16-fold increase in transmission density to 10 Gbps. For its customers, this capability equates to handling 128,000 calls per second, or 200 high definition multimedia channels simultaneously. As demands increase, the Corvis XF system can be upgraded to 80 Gbps, which would enable more than a million simultaneous telephone calls, or 1,500 high-definition multimedia channels.
France Telecom's use of Corvis' technology to upgrade this link is part of the carrier's program to provide high-speed services nationwide. Leveraging the benefits of Corvis' technology, France Telecom will be able to provide Corsica with faster Internet access through ADSL* technology.
Corvis' optical networking solutions are designed to reduce network costs and enable carriers to offer advanced wavelength services to their customers at significantly lower costs. Carriers can leverage the benefits of Corvis-enabled optical networks to rapidly provision new services such as wavelength-on-demand, optical protection and restoration and dynamic service level agreements.
