Hey.. those high speed trains would be great...

Unfortunately, those who have been to the US understand that the next village doesn't lie a couple of miles down the road, as they commonly do in Europe.

I remember a German gal I knew in college who was studying on an athletic scholarship.. She was from the Munich area... Anyhoo... the one thing that simply blew her away was the sheer immensity of the US when compared to Europe.. I took her to the Grand Canyon and she was breathless at its size and the lack of any inhabited area nearby..

Yep... a high speed train would be awesome... and awesomely expensive. We can't even seem to make a profit with the new high speed train running from DC to NYC... The tracks are not made for such speeds and there are too many curves.

Personally, I'm very partial to Mag-Lev trains, but again.. we're talking BIG $$$$$....

Energy independence is a national security and foreign policy issue. And someday this nation is going to wake up and realize that rather than finding our foreign policy held hostage to some former bedouin masquerading as a King (or prince), it's far less expensive, both in treasure and blood, to not be so dependent..

There will always be a place for fossil fuels and we should definitely continue to explore and exploit such deposits. But that should be combined with some coherent government involvement in advancing the infrastructure for creation, distrobution, and use of hydrogen....

But then of course, we'll have the enviro-wackos griping about how we're disrupting the atmosphere's nitrogen/oxygen ratio...

Alas....
