In your definition of greed there's a preposition "beyond". In all definitions of greed one will find some preposition or adverb which asserts "too much" or "extra". The problem is that that's a relative judgement which is taken as absolute.

Someone's surfeit may be someone else's dearth. What one gets may be due to extra effort, but another doesn't see the effort and reaches the unwarranted conclusion that the gain was unworthy. The word is impossible to adequately define, yet all think they know what it means. The same is the case with the word, "fair". Each thinks his own watch is correct, but all watches are wrong.
