STEC - a gift for the daring?

SimpleTech beats in Q1 but sees soft prices in Q2 (STEC) by Michael Baron

SimpleTech (STEC) is off $1.49, or 16.7 percent, to $7.41, in afternoon action as investors reacted to
company caution about its pricing environment in the second quarter. Thursday's drop comes despite a
better than expected performance from the Santa Ana, Calif., memory technology firm in the first quarter. It
reported pro forma earnings of $1.8 million, or 5 cents a share, for the period, 4 cents better than the
average estimate of analysts polled by Thomson Financial/First Call. Revenue jumped 43 percent in the latest
three months to $51 million from $35.6 million in the same period a year earlier. Looking ahead, SimpleTech
said it sees temporary softness in pricing for DRAM (dynamic random access memory) components in the
second quarter. Revenue is projected between $45 million and $50 million for the quarter, yielding earnings
of 1 to 3 cents a share. SimpleTech expects to benefit from stronger market conditions in the second half.
