DoCoMo will license its W-CDMA technology in effort to resusitate UMTS

NTT DoCoMo to License Essential Patents for
W-CDMA 3G Wireless Technology

date: April 25, 2002

NTT DoCoMo announced today that it will begin licensing patents for its
proprietary W-CDMA technology, on which , the world's first
third-generation (3G) wireless service, is based.

As global telecommunications operators gear up for launch of 3G mobile
communications services, DoCoMo is envisioning extensive use of its
IMT-2000 compliant W-CDMA system. To encourage worldwide
implementation, DoCoMo will offer essential patents at reasonable and
non-exclusive terms.

Patents will be licensed to manufacturers which supply 3G products to
mobile communications operators. Widespread adoption of W-CDMA
technology is expected to reduce procurement and production costs,
which will contribute to lowering fees for service and products.

Manufacturers wishing to apply for licenses are requested to fill in and
submit an application form by fax or email. The application form, W-CDMA
essential patent list and further licensing information are also available at
