Free Spirit:

How young are you? Lots of folks 'claim' to have 300mpg engines that were 'stolen' by 'big oil'. These same folks are always looking out for Black Helicopters :-)

As for your alternatives:
Hydro - kills fish, prevents spawning - major environmental groups looking to dismantle dams.
Wind - kills birds - wind farms have been sued by environmentalists.

As to Helium - its much rarer than Hydrogen. Thats like saying we can make gold (out of platinum :-)

As to a hydrogen economy - the best alternative I have seen to bridge the distribution gap is a plan to make hydrogen from gasoline. Portable machines could be installed at existing stations. Extremely low polution numbers and a reasonable bridge - but it assumes we can build an efficient long term method to produce and distribute hydrogen. But lots not mandate it and wind up burning coal to power hydrogen plants.
