every time crude futures have spiked in the past year, or Iraq has threatened to stop their oil production or something else has threatened the world's oil supply, the Saudis have stepped up and said that they will make sure the world's oil supply remains stabile. Every single damn time, like clockwork.

And you don't think they did that gratis, do you?

No they make a lot of money doing it.

1 - If Iraq cuts back or production in other countries is disrupted and Saudi can take over some of their share, then Saudi can sell more oil without lowering prices.

2 - Saudi knows that if the price is allowed to go to high then demand will go down and not just in the short run. If the price stays up, or if the up and down price moves are too chaotic then people will find ways to conserve oil use, they will spend more on efficency, and they will look for non-oil energy sources and non mideast sources for oil.

also

3 - We pulled their bacon out of the frying pan, and pulled Kuwait's out of the fire.
