On a rural site I've got a Aero403 producing 100 - 400 watts at a cost of $520 for the unit. The rest of the alt energy system cost $4k incl. a backup diesel, bought used over the web.

A new 1kw - 1.6kw Bergey XL1 wind gen is about $2k, along with 1kw of solar cells should be sufficient for the house I'm building (but not the shop w. 3ph 220v equip). I'll still be on the grid if need be, but will have control of costs.

That's without any rebates.

Water power's good if you have it.
