KIS, The shot that finally got him was delivered in the back of the head from a cop who had been slashed but not killed. BTW, not true on the head shot concept. A few did hit his head before the coup de grace. Heads are tough unless you get an eyeball or an open mouth or an ear canal or up your nose with a rubber hose. Mafia boss Frank Costello was shot in the head at close range and survived to say he didn't recognize the shooters in court. Many, many people have done great damage after head shots.

But you've hit on one key. Placement is very important. Caliber is also important, especially if you are not that lucky on placement. Bullet size and configuration are also key. But, most handgun calibers have pretty poor records of stopping determined folks. A 38 special ranks 38% on one shot stops. A 44 magnum hits only 88% with the most popular loads. A Federal 125 grain .357 Magnum ranks 97% on one shot stops. This is according to studies done on corpses by a policeman in Detroit, where there is no shortage of gunshot corpses.
