Possible Reason for Drug Sector Being Down

Yesterday (10:30), in a FY02 conference call to analysts Rite Aid disclosed their same-store-sales estimate for April of 6%, with little to negative front-end growth for that month. This shows that the front-end growth (with Easter falling in March, vs. April last year) is not as robust as some analysts assumed, and had grown in large part due to late start of flu season (see my theory for February release #reply-17186227).

Although the overall markets are down, Drug stocks shifted lower before weakness in the markets. It goes to show that RAD's growth at this point is similer, in some cases higher, than its major competitors. Certain changes may increase Rite Aid sales growth (offset by store closings), and closing of underperforming stores, among other things, will increase sales/store and cashflow.
