I had a learning experience on this subject a few decades ago. I was watching the original showing of Roots with a black friend. I was just horrified by the physical abuse of the slaves that was portrayed. He on the other hand was oblivious to that and was totally focused on the humiliation. I've never forgotten that lesson.
