I recommend Yoran Hazony's book, The Jewish State: The Struggle for Israel's Soul, about the ideological struggle inside Israel between Zionism and anti-Zionism (or post-Zionism as its modern variants are sometimes called). It was very illuminating. I hadn't realized until then that Hebrew University has a strong anti-Zionist streak that started with Martin Buber. Hebrew University still has a large megaphone in Israeli affairs via the pages of Ha'aretz (and the New York Times, whose Mideast coverage tends to echo Ha'aretz).

The basic problem is, that given its current neighbors, if Israel stops being Zionist, Israel stops existing. Period.

In the book Hazony believed that most Israelis were Zionists but the Oslo post-Zionist era had undermined their knowledge about why and wherefore they should be Zionist. Also, the lessons of the Holocaust were wearing off. In the world at large, the Holocaust had been such an awful illustration of the downside of Jewish powerlessness that it had effectively shut down the Zionist - anti-Zionist debate for fifty years. Now the effect has worn off and the debate has resumed.

Given that background, the op-ed piece was bittersweet. Hazony is relieved to see Israel unite, but sorrowful to see it reunite under such terrible existential threat.
