Perhaps this will make it clearer: I am against abortion, but I would not sanction the mother who sought a first trimester abortion, and I would be comparatively lenient with the physician- provider. That is not because I think that the mother did nothing wrong, but because I can see the point of view enough to decline to punish her. I do not agree with Ashcroft, and would not have done it myself, but I can sympathize enough with his point of view to decline to condemn him. Everything else has been a defense of myself for taking an ambivalent position.....
